Freemoby Project Second Year Update.

Freemoby project has just passed its second review evaluation by the European Commission. Focused on the implementation of easy to deploy micro fully electrical vehicles (up to 650kg) and city EVs   (650-1000kg), freemoby is counting on renewable energy installations like solar energy in roof houses, solar parking and photovoltaic battery installations to attract a wider number of EV users impacting on efficiency, reduced energy waste and lowering the dependency on hydrocarbon.

During this second year, the project has achieved the main objective of demonstrating the technologies for home recharging and battery swapping. Three demonstrators have been built and tested for functionality in the recharge of electric vehicles.

Moreover the project has performed successfully recharging from on-board PV and the demonstration and the testing of a ASILC-compliant BMS with outstanding performances in terms of computational power.

Moreover, the project is following-up the dissemination of the results with the continuous participation in to events, fairs and conferences. Amongst them the most important have been a presentation in the USA at the Printed Electronics conference in Santa Clara, the participation to the European Nanoelectronic forum in Cannes and the Motor Show in Torino

At the same time, during this period CIDAUT has designed a structure that will act as building/home for validation purposes. This structure allocates twenty five photovoltaic panels, connecting them to the EVSE and the rack system, allowing the user to either charge the vehicle or make use of Freemoby’s partial swapping system. In order to design this structure, a load analysis has been carried out, including computer fluid dynamics calculations in order to evaluate the loads the panels are submitted to under different wind conditions. The selected loads have been used in the mechanical calculation and design cycle of the structure, thus resulting in the following.

3, 2, 1… Countdown for EVolution Prototypes Manufacturing

The EVolution Project is nowadays crossing its midterm on its amazing journey. Our itinerary began with a Pininfarina city car concept (The Nido, a Full Electric Vehicle and with an Aluminium BiW), and hopefully will arrive to a vehicle prototyped with the most representative components (Under body, Structural node, Crash cross beam and crash box, Suspension mechanical sub-frame, and Side-door) developed in advanced metallic materials and reinforced composites. Joining and manufacturing technologies, as well as recyclability, modularity, ergonomics and safety are main topics considered within the developed activities. All of this without forgetting the main premise in all Electric Vehicle design: weight reduction.

Evolution work efforts are distributed in different Work Packages; those are related as the following graphic shows:

The first block is already reaching its final step: up-scaling of manufacturing technologies for components selected as real demonstrators in this project.

Once the first large block of work is finished, the prototypes will be manufactured and assembled for real test to validate previous stage design.

At the same time, an important work for Dissemination and Exploitation activities was developed during these last months. The impulse came from the Exploitation Strategy Seminar received.

It has been a short but interesting time; all partners are eager to start developing the prototypes and achieve the next stage. In the following months Evolution partners will demonstrate the potential of the designs and the materials in order to achieve the ambitious weight reduction target. Final Event for the Green eMotion Project to be held in Brussels February 2015

The Green eMotion project is coming to its end next February. After four years of developing interoperable solutions for EV, analyzing standardization and infrastructure needs, and establishing the electric grids requirements, the project has reached its objective to support the roll out of EV in Europe.

Among other results, the project has successfully:

  • Developed a marketplace and a clearing house that will allow Electric Vehicles (EV) drivers across Europe to connect their vehicles in different charging points.
  • Carried out several standardization activities on communication and identification to propose new standards.
  • Defined the infrastructure requirements, as well as the basis for the future requirements on the electric grids.

CIDAUT’s main role in the project has focused on coordinating the standardization activities, as well as to analyze the environmental impact of EV, to propose measures and policies to optimize the environmental benefits of EV.

On February 25-26 February 2015 the EU Stakeholder Forum will return for the 3rd edition that will once again bring together the three flagship electromobility projects of the European Commission: FREVUE, Green eMotion and ZeEUS. The venue of the meeting will be THON HOTEL BRUSSELS CITY CENTRE

The forum will be a mixture of parallel workshop sessions and high level round tables with participation from EU, national and regional political stakeholders as well and industry and research institutes. Free-Moby’s First Review Meeting

The first review meeting of Free-Moby project was held last December in Brussels. Free-Moby is a three years FP7 founded project focused on the implementation of easy to deploy micro fully electrical vehicles and city EVs.

All the partners involved in the activities developed during the first twelve months of the project were present in the meeting. Cidaut presented the results of the “Preliminary market study for premium vehicles”, where the new trends in the demands of the consumer for the electric vehicles have been analyzed. The evolution of the characteristics of premium vehicles has been studied, how the comfort and the reliability have given the leading role to the passive and active safety and how nowadays the entertainment and the information are growing in importance for the new customers. Most of the premium characteristics are related to the connection of the vehicle so a deep analysis of the way this connection works has been made.

Cidaut also presented the results on the evolution of the smart charging technology. Free-Moby promotes the integration of renewable energies in electromobility through the installation of photovoltaic panels at home and on the vehicle. One of the targets of the project is to optimize the performance of the harvested energy. The solution found in Free-Moby project consists on the combination of DC-DC charging and a partial swapping. The innovation introduced in the case of the DC-DC conductive charging is to use a compact high performance charger outside the vehicle. This solution is possible thanks to the development of a high efficient rack compatible for vehicle and home use. This rack is composed by four battery modules that can be easily removed for partial swapping allowing a high degree of interaction between home and vehicle. The batteries charged at home with solar energy can be used for electromobility applications and the vehicle can be plug to the home in emergency cases. In order to achieve this integration, the empowerment of the communication has been highlighted as crucial. During first year important research has been made on communication inside the vehicle and also on vehicle to everything.

Green eMotion conference showcases an EU-wide interoperable electromobility system

The EU’s flagship electromobility project, Green eMotion, has organised for the first time an electric vehicle rally from the Green eMotion demonstration regions to Brussels. Over the past few days, five teams – EdF (Strasbourg), ESB (Belfast), RSE (Milano), TÜV Nord (Hannover), and Verbund (VIenna) – drove their electric vehicles to Brussels, using different charging stations along the way. The tour culminated on september 18th with a high-level conference with the Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport  Mr Siim Kallas. A parallel interoperability demonstration showed that the marketplace developed within the project now allows Europe-wide access to charging infrastructure.

 

“Green eMotion has achieved major milestones during the 3 ½ years of project work to enable the mass market roll-out of electromobility: Prototype implementation of a really scalable, open ICT system enabling Europe-wide access to charging infrastructure, development of necessary standards for electromobility and a roadmap for future standardisation work, detailed technical work (from grid impact studies to the evaluation of electric vehicles under real life conditions) as well as the preparation of guidelines and policies,” said Dr. Heike Barlag, Siemens AG, the project coordinator of Green eMotion.

Following the keynote speech by Vice-President Kallas on the future of electromobility in Europe and the view from the electricity industry presented by EURELECTRIC Secretary General Mr Hans ten Berge, Green eMotion representatives from partners Enel, IBM and RSE explained some of the project’s successes, including the demonstration of a truly interoperable electromobility system, the setting up of a marketplace for roaming throughout Europe, and the work carried out on standardisation.

As a second highlight of the event, Green eMotion partners demonstrated their developed interoperability solution with electric vehicles and charging infrastructure from different operators throughout Europe. The charging infrastructure for the demonstration was provided by EDF, Endesa, Enel, ESB, Iberdrola and RWE. The demonstration showed how users can easily charge their electric car independently from their local infrastructure operator. This is made possible via the Green eMotion marketplace platform provided by IBM, an open ICT infrastructure developed within the project that includes a clearinghouse service from SAP for roaming. This marketplace was also used during the Rally to Brussels when the teams – running cars from BMW, Nissan, Opel and Renault – charged with their own user-ID at the charging stations of other project partners.

Other working areas of the Green eMotion project addressed by speakers in the conference included the effect of electric vehicles on the power system, sustainable business models for electromobility, increasing the acceptance of electric cars, and evaluating and influencing their range. About Green eMotion: The project’s 42 partners have joined forces to explore the basic conditions that are needed for Europe-wide electromobility. The primary goal of the project is to demonstrate an interoperable electromobility system with easy access to charging infrastructure all over Europe. Such a system is only feasible with standards that can be adopted internationally. To this end, practical research is being conducted in different demonstration regions all over Europe with the aim of developing and demonstrating a commonly accepted and user-friendly framework that combines interoperable and scalable technical solutions with a sustainable business platform.
