In the frame of Salient, Horizon Europe Project, Cidaut together with eleven partners will search for an innovative solution of the vehicle structure in the event of a crash. The front end structure of the vehicle will be equipped with intelligent sensors, whose first mission will be to advise the ADAS of the vehicle to avoid the impact, and in case this is not possible, the second mission will be to inform the structure of the vehicle about the kind of impact, the direction and the speed. According to this information, the solution developed in the project will modify the behavior of the component in charge of the energy absorption in order to optimize its behavior.
To achieve this innovative result, the consortium will develop new materials, based on advanced composites, aluminium or hybrid combinations on both. The project covers all the steps from the material characterization to the final validation test, where Cidaut will use its facilities to perform the real crashes that will demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of the solution.
Salient is a 36 months project that started on September 2022. CTAG, as project coordinator, hosted the kick off meeting at the headquarters in O Porriño. The twelve partners were present in the meeting enjoying the opportunity to celebrate face to face meetings, and taking advantage of the occasion to fix the next steps and milestones of the project.

OSIRIS is an ambitious national project whose main objective is to promote a strategic cooperation in recycling and recovery technologies to improve the circular economy of composites and complex plastic materials with high added value, a work that began last January.
This three-year project in which four Technology Centers participate: AIMPLAS (Technological Institute of Plastics), AITEX (Textile Research Institute), CIDAUT (Foundation for Transport and Energy Research and Development) and GAIKER (GAIKER Foundation), is financed by the CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development), through the Ministry of Science and Innovation, in the context of the grant of aid for Technological Centers of Excellence “Cervera” (CER-20211009).
The consortium is working together, sharing experiences, solutions and good practices that contribute to improving recycling technologies for composite and complex plastic materials. Technologies in which the members of the consortium have been working in recent years and their corresponding results have allowed them to be recognized as “CERVERA Centers of Excellence”. The OSIRIS NETWORK, formed by these excellent Technological Centers, has the objective of positioning itself as a reference network both nationally and internationally, leading to the growth of the R+D+i projects and technology transfer to the business and industrial fabric.
To achieve this objective, the network is centred on three strategic technological approaches: technology for waste recycling, recovery of intermediate products and post-processing of intermediate products into final products. On the advances of these scientific bases, led by more than 84 researchers and technicians from the whole network, the strategy of national and international dissemination, the training and the attracting talents, the attracting companies and the planning of new R+D+i projects is supported. All of the above aims to contribute with a global and strengthened vision to the challenges of the present and the future with respect to the recycling of complex raw materials.

On March 27, 2018 took place the fourth meeting on Circular Economy promoted by the Regional Government of Castilla y León through the Ministry of Development and Environment and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
This time the title of the meeting was “Circular Economy and Bioeconomy: Zero waste – Waste to resource” and it focuses on the use of waste as subproducts instead of dispose them in landfills as a way to accomplish with the principles of the Circular Economy.

During the day, legal possibilities in order to obtain an end-of-waste consideration were highlighted. The European Commission has already set down end-of-waste criteria for glass, metal and copper scrap and criteria for various other materials that are under development. This latter aspect, end-of-waste concept, is regarded as a first step toward these materials to be considered as raw materials for other processes more than as a waste that have to be managed.
Certification processes around Circular Economy were also reviewed which are an important tool for enterprises to demonstrate its actual commitment with Circular Economy.
Finally, there was a time for exchanging information about existing positive experiences on waste re-used within Castilla y León, mainly related with the agri-food sector.
Different events on Circular Economy have taken place in the last months in Valladolid and CIDAUT took the opportunity to participate in them.
Entrepreneurs from all over the country gathered on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th of November in Valladolid to promote an innovative model of a more responsible economy. The Agency of Innovation and Economic Development of Valladolid celebrated this weekend the first edition of Circularweekend, a national innovation meeting to learn to launch ideas with circular business models, modernize companies implementing more efficient processes in the use of resources and get in touch with all the agents of the circular economy ecosystem.

The meeting, organized by Enviroo and aimed at making the concept of circular economy more practical, has had workshops to solve the challenges of this type of economic model and launch new projects.
CIDAUT was present in the first day and with its participation helped to promote in this way an innovative model of economy based on the value of products, materials and resources being kept in the economy for as long as possible, thus helping to minimize the generation of waste.
Moreover, CIDAUT has participated in the conference on “Circular Economy: New models of production and consumption” organized by the Institute for Business Competitiveness of Castilla y León (ICE) on 29th of November. It took place at PRAE (Environmental and Educational Proposals) facilities in Valladolid. This initiative is part of the Circular Economy and Bioeconomy Strategy, promoted by the Government of Castilla y León through the Departments of Development and Environment and Economy and Finance, respectively. More specifically, it belongs to the activity of dissemination of the Circular Economy and the bioeconomy between the society of Castile and Leon in order to promote initiatives in cooperation.
The attendance and participation in these conferences by CIDAUT has allowed knowing in greater depth the framework of work on the use of waste within the scope of the circular economy, as well as the main barriers and opportunities that they generate.
Last September in San Sebastian, the Remaghic Project partners held the 24 month meeting general assembly. During the last months many decisions have been taken on the best chain of processes to recycle rare earths and on the design of the currently manufactured facility to recycle Mg and produce the Remaghic magnesium alloy. Currently, casting tests with different alloying elements have been done, corrosion and mechanical testing campaigns are ongoing, and the project faces the last project year where the industrial validation and the LCA will highlight the results achieved.
The meeting took place on the 20th and 21st of September. During the first day, the meeting was focused on the last activities done to recycle rare earths from different residue streams (WP1), on the update of the alloy development (WP3), and on the industrial facility that has been designed and manufactured to enable magnesium foundries recycle in house their own scraps and drosses (WP4). The last part of the first day was dedicated to the LCA analysis of the different ongoing processes in the project.
The second project day was fully dedicated to the Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation work package. Now that results are on the table, Remaghic partners are making an effort to contribute with their knowledge on recycling processes to Europe’s scientific and manufacturing community. To mention one example, Cidaut presented the results and next steps for the Remaghic project at the International Magnesium Association European Committee Meeting last 25th of October held at Brunel University (BCAST) London. In November Remaghic project parntes will be also taking part at the23rd SETAC Europe LCA Case Studies Symposium with two posters respectively dedicated to rare earth elements recycling and magnesium recycling methodologies. The Symposium, organized by the International Life Cycle Academy will take place in Barcelona, meet us there!
