On April 8th, the closing event for the project “Transport Foresight 2050: A Strategic Roadmap for Decarbonisation” took place at the auditorium of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD).
During the event, CIDAUT participated in the round table discussion on Technological Aspects, moderated by Ángeles Táuler, General Director of the Spanish Railways Foundation (PTFE). The panel brought together experts including José Ignacio Domínguez (CIDAUT), Andrés Catalán (PAE Aerospace Platform), José Luis Planas (ETRA), Marta L. Carpio (MITECO), and Borja Fernández (CARTIF). The discussion highlighted that transport decarbonisation will rely on the smart integration of multiple technologies rather than on a single solution. Electrification, hydrogen, synthetic fuels, digitalisation, and demand management were identified as key elements, while large-scale deployment across the entire territory remains a major challenge.
The aim of the “Transport Foresight 2050” initiative was to build a shared vision of how transport should evolve by 2050 in order to meet the decarbonisation commitments established in the Spanish Long-Term Decarbonisation Strategy 2050. The initiative also sought to strengthen collaboration among sector organisations and key stakeholders involved in this transition. It was promoted by the General Subdirectorate for Energy Efficiency and Access to Energy of MITERD.
The initiative, led by the Energy Efficiency Technological Platform (PTE-ee) and coordinated by a steering group made up of several Technological Platforms, including CIDAUT, organised 10 thematic workshops throughout 2025 addressing different aspects of mobility and transport. Representatives from relevant public and private organisations participated in each workshop to analyse the challenges and opportunities linked to the decarbonisation process. Each workshop resulted in a report summarising the perspectives shared by participants and identifying innovative solutions aligned with both national and European strategies.
